Our Team

Our Team

As the Owner and President of Scott’s Quality Lawn Care, allow me to say, I’m very proud of our SQLC Team.

Compared to some of our peers out there, we may be a very small business… but our business model works very well for us and our clients. Everyone of my Team is key to our business success. We wouldn’t be where we are in our growth if not for all of them doing their part so well.

We’re more than just fellow co-workers. We’re connected by our similar passions and our shared vision. Lawn care is what we all have in common, there’s no doubt about that.

We Look After Our Clients
In the office, we’re a small but very efficient Team… We’ve got two very experienced customer service and sales people looking after our clients while liaising with our Field Managers. As you’ll read in their bios, throughout their entire careers they’ve provided exceptional sales and service in every company they’ve ever worked for… They believe in building strong client relationships and they’ve become good friends with most of our valued clients, some who have been with us since the very beginning back in 2010.

Scott Kallal

We won’t spend much time here as much of Scott’s Bio is part of the “Humble Beginnings” section. This will focus more on the personal side of Scott. Yes, he actually has an identity outside of lawn care if you can believe it!

Scott was born and raised in Tofield, Alberta. His mom was a teacher at Tofield School and his dad is a local businessman who has been involved in various ventures, but most widely known for Kallal Motor’s in Tofield. Scott also carries this entrepreneurial spirit.

He graduated high school in 2010 and went on to start his lawn care business right out of high school. He attended the U of A’s Augustana Campus in Camrose in the fall of 2010 and completed a Bachelor of Management with a major in Business Economics with distinction in 2014. Scott also obtained his private pilot’s licence in 2011 during this time and enjoys renting a Cessna 172 for short haul flights and touring around the area. Scott hopes to own his own aircraft one day.

One of Scott’s first loves was hockey. Scott played in the Tofield Minor hockey system from the age of 6 to 17. Some of his favourite childhood memories are from playing on the Tofield teams. Scott never had the talent to go much further in hockey. He played rec hockey for a few years in university but gave up playing when the fear of being injured could halt his lawn care business as it’s sole employee. Scott has since started playing recreationally again since he is no longer part of the immediate field staff. He often says that he can’t believe he went this long without playing, though his love for the sport never waivered. This has transferred to the joy Scott feels when he is on the ice helping with both his children’s hockey teams.

He is a huge Oilers fan also. One of his most cherished childhood memories was the Oiler’s Stanley Cup run in 2006 even though things didn’t end how Oilers fans would have hoped. As you can imagine, he is more hopeful than ever for his team to win it all.

Scott also has been an avid motorsports and NASCAR fan and even raced a Legends Car from 2016-2020 at Edmonton International Raceway and Saskatoon. The time and money commitments got to be too great especially with a thriving business and young family, so Scott got out of Legends Cars in 2020 and has somewhat filled the void with some sim racing on the side.

Scott enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids. He met his wife Meagan in 2013 while attending university. They got married in 2017 and have had two children. Wallace was born in 2018 and Berkley in 2020. Scott and Meagan are very busy and involved with their two children. They are both in hockey and enjoy and attend many other activities too.

Scott is an avid golfer, enjoys fishing, downhill skiing, and water skiing too. There’s a rumor going around about his love for golf that he is “only there for the grass.” He also spends a lot of time talking about turf grass and obsessing over his lawn and his clients’ lawns. Not sure if we mentioned his love of lawns!

Owner

Meagan Kallal

Meagan KalliMeagan grew up in New Sarepta for her first 7 years of life where her parents owned a store, some may remember it, the J-Mart.  Meagan then moved near Armena on an Acreage and finished her school in Hay Lakes,  AB.  After her father’s sudden death in 2007 her family decided to make the move to Camrose, AB where they have made a home since 2008.  Throughout Meagan's life the world of Jump Rope was a big part of her life.  She competed every year at both provincials and National competitions all throughout Canada from 2008-2009.  Jump Rope was her main focus, even competing in a World Jr. competition in 2005 where her team received 2 bronze medals for their Country!

Throughout her career in Jump Rope with the Camrose Spirals Meagan became community driven and that community spirit has not been lost even though many of her Jump Rope skills have been lost.  Through fundraising for many years to help Meagan accomplish her goals she has dreamed of being part of a community driven business who also helps people reach their goals.  Fun fact: At the age of 33 Meagan decided to get back into Jump Rope!  She joined back up with the Camrose Spirals and competed at both provincials and Nationals in her 30+ age division. The competition was tight!  She did earn herself a bronze medal for the 2024 year.  Unfortunately, she sustained an achilles injury and has been trying to heal since then.

Meagan's first job was at the Camrose Zellers as a cashier, she then worked at Superstore and Walmart in Camrose before deciding what to do with her future.  Meagan learned a strong sense of customer service and quickly learned how to be expert with her customer service skills.  This was certainly an asset during the 2008 recession when it was quite difficult to secure a job. When Meagan finished high school she decided she wanted to attend University after taking a year off school and working at the local Camrose Wal-Mart. Meagan attended Mount Royal University in the Bachelor of Education University Transfer program. Meagan then transferred to the University of Calgary in 2011 and attended school for another 2 years.  In 2013 Meagan decided to move back to Camrose to live with her mom and her grandma whose health had been declining.  Meagan took her final 3 university classes at Augustana Campus and finished her degree in the Spring of 2014 graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in English from the U of C in 2014.

How interesting, Meagan and Scott finished their last semester of School at the same school, at the same time.  Meagan and Scott had met in Camrose before Meagan started at Augustana so Scott was able to show her around.  While Meagan was attending the University of Calgary, Meagan worked at the co-op gas station in her neighborhood. She worked her way up from being gas attendant, to cashier, to one of the store managers.  This helped her financially as she put herself through University.  When she moved home to Camrose, she transferred to the East side Co-op gas bar as a store manager and continued to support herself going through school and paying off debts.

Meagan decided she was done with University and did not want to pursue another 2 years to become a teacher like she had originally planned.  Meagan worked a few different jobs with special needs children and seniors before she found the full time Sales position working at McClellan Wheaton.  She worked in sales for 2 years and in 2017 moved to the position she created herself at Scott's Quality Lawn Care, the Customer Service/Sales position.  Meagan and Scott began to share the office workload of Scott's Quality Lawn Care and together began to truly expand the business.  Meagan and Scott got married in September 2017 and welcomed their first son Wallace in August 2018.  They also welcomed acquiring the business of Pro-Lawn in December 2017.   Life was hectic!  Their growing business and growing family has been a pride and joy for both Scott and Meagan.  In 2020 Meagan and Scott welcomed their second son Berkley to the family right while Covid was booming. Since having children Meagan has primarily stayed with the children at home while still trying to be part of the business that has continued to feel the boom she helped create.  Scott and Meagan often joke that if it hadn't been for her Scott would still be a one truck/two man crew working out of their garage haha!  Times have surely changed!

Lawn Mowing & Snow Removal Field Manager

Matt Santoz

Matt joined Scott’s Quality Lawn Care when Scott still operated out of his garage back in 2017. Matt started on the lawn mowing crew and was soon promoted to a Crew Leader role that same winter and the subsequent lawn care season of 2018. After serving 3 seasons on the lawn mowing and snow removals crews, Scott saw the need to delegate again. Scott could no longer continue running the spraying side of the business and the lawn mowing side of the business at the same time. Matt was the perfect candidate to take over running the lawn mowing and snow removal crews.

Matt took over the snow removal crews for the 2019-2020 season and naturally the lawn mowing crews for 2020. Ever since then Matt has been instilling the same work ethic and leadership in his crews that earned him his own promotion in 2019. Our guys love working for Matt. Matt expects a lot out of his crews, but Matt knows the burden that goes along with those high expectations of quality and showing up day after day whether that be in the heat of the summer or extreme cold in the winter. As with our other managers, the crews naturally look up to Matt and can relate to him as someone who has been in their shoes. We at Scott’s Quality Lawn Care could not ask for a more loyal ambassador of our company. Matt has been with us through the ups and downs and is a prime example of someone who represents our values and company culture. His favourite part of working here is our people Matt says, “Lotsa good people is always a nice perk and also being able to talk to all the different customers whenever I’m out and about.”

Matt was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and enjoyed playing sports growing up including hockey, football, and soccer. Matt is an avid sports fan and huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs (pre-Swifty era). In fact, Priest Holmes and Dante Hall were the players that helped make Matt a fan of the team during the early 2000s. He was able to attend a regular season game back in the Fall of 2023 which was a bucket list trip for Matt especially since his team went on to win it all that year. Matt is another one of our “washed up athletes” at Scott’s Quality Lawn Care, although he may have the most impressive sports resume of all of us.

He attended the University of Guelph studying Police Foundations and played for the football team there for a couple of seasons. Just for fun Matt recently tried to kick a 50-yard field goal without playing for many years and he made it after only a few warm-up attempts! I’d leave out the fact that his leg was sore for days after, but we’re always poking fun at each other at Scott’s Quality Lawn Care. Matt has also enjoyed playing some recreational volleyball and shinny hockey here in Camrose. Matt is also an avid golfer now that (in his words) he’s washed up at other sports.

Matt and his wife Holley moved to Camrose for her job as an X-ray technologist. Matt and Holley got married in 2017 and had two children shortly thereafter. These days Matt enjoys spending time with his wife Holley and his two young children. Since moving here Matt and his wife Holley have made many friends and love the small town feel of Camrose. They enjoy taking trips to the Mountains and are avid country music fans. In fact, I’m not sure if they’ve missed a Big Valley Jamboree festival since they’ve been here. They enjoy sharing this love of music with their daughter and son who attend with them as well. They try to go back home every couple of summers to see their families, cousins, and friends. Sometimes they enjoy meeting their family for a trip in a warmer climate too. Their family also loves coming to Camrose to visit Matt and Holley and their two young children.

Interesting Story…
In 2016 they bought a vehicle from McClellan Wheaton here in Camrose and their salesperson just happened to be Scott’s soon to be wife Meagan. Meagan suggested that Matt apply at Scott’s Quality Lawn Care for the following spring. Matt did apply, but Scott only needed one candidate and was hung up 50/50 between another person and Matt. Meagan would be the deciding factor in Scott’s 50/50 decision and urged Scott to hire Matt. Scott did, and Matt has been one of Scott’s best hires to date, or maybe we should say one of Meagan’s best hires to date.

Lawn Application Field Manager & Winter Crew Leader

Chad Mailer

Chad grew up on a beef cattle farm near Big Valley, AB. He moved to Camrose to attend college at CLBI and stayed for University at the U of A’s Augustana Campus. Chad studied Christian Discipleship, Sociology, and Environmental Studies. Chad met his wife Ashley during college and ended up deciding to stay in Camrose as they felt Camrose to be a really nice place to raise a family. Chad and his wife Ashley were married, pregnant, and bought their first home within a year. They have been married since 2019 and have two young children just starting school as they enjoy the chaos of a young family.

Through Chad’s studies he has developed a deepening interest in the intersection of social issues, urban design, and religion. Chad’s other interests include cooking, board games, canoeing, hiking, and brewing mead. He enjoys hosting board game nights to justify buying more games! When Chad has time he enjoys some back country camping and canoeing. Chad comes from a working background in catering and takes great joy in cooking and hosting events with food at the center. Chad always enjoys trying a new recipe.

Scott hired Chad in the spring of 2018 to fill out a spot on the lawn mowing crew. Chad quickly worked his way into a crew leader spot. Scott often says, “farm kids rarely let us down,” and Chad was no exception as his strong work ethic was very apparent early on. Through the years Chad was a mainstay as a Lawn Mowing and Snow Removal Crew Leader. Chad has always enjoyed the work here and when asked about his favourite part he stated, “I would say the workplace culture, friendly nature, and working at a company where I can take pride in our services.”

In 2024, we had a need to fill on spray crew as we were in a transition period and looking for a new manager on the spraying side of the company. Scott had Chad in mind as Chad had obtained his Industrial Applicator’s certificate and had taken some work up North for a short stint before returning to Scott’s Quality Lawn Care. Before Scott could speak to Chad about the opportunity, Chad pro-actively came to Scott and pitched himself as the perfect fit for the position.

Scott took back over the reigns of the spraying side of the business in 2024 and brought Chad over to learn the ins and outs. Chad obtained his Landscape Applicator’s certificate prior to the 2024 season. Scott started Chad on a crew spraying lawns. Chad mastered this art quite quickly and Scott started giving Chad increased responsibility. By August of 2024 Chad was single handedly running the spraying side of the business while Scott kept a close eye on operations. By this time, Scott had seen enough to give Chad the role full time.

Chad continues to thrive in this role thanks to his strong work ethic and interest in continual learning. Chad has developed great relationships with many of our clients over the years and is a strong communicator and leader when it comes to running his spray crews and giving them everything they need to succeed. In the winters Chad acts as an associate manager to Matt as the Matt and Chad duo run winter snow removal operations together.

Customer Service & Sales

Daryl Stratichuk

Daryl’s a rare find. By his own admission when he first pitched me about joining our Company, he was very much understating his plethora of qualifications.  Daryl had way more qualifications than I was even looking for when he applied for Sales & Customer Service Rep.  He’s young at heart, down–to-earth, and could already be retired but isn’t the least bit interested in that as he says, he’s “gotta be doing something and loves keeping busy”. He loves building relationships with clients and “always loved improving things and making things better for people”, and that’s a tremendous asset.  As we’ve found out after 7 years now, he loves lawn care. He’s a natural at this and must have green-coloured blood, perhaps even a couple green thumbs LOL!

He’s got many decades of customer service and sales & marketing background to draw from, plus as many years in Business Management, Business & Organizational Development, and HR, having worked in all kinds of industries and companies. He’s had his own successful Management Consulting, Creative Marketing & Web Development business for some 13 years, too.  He’s had a very diverse career and he’s one you could surely say “has been there and done that” for many things in his career and life.  A multi-tasking master with transferable skills galore.  We and our clients are the happy beneficiaries of that experience and knowledge now.

Daryl’s passionate about everything he does and a strong communicator. He’s more than just one of our great ambassadors for our Company, he’s a key behind-the-scenes contributor to everything going on here.  He’s our Lawn Care Support Specialist that writes most of our Lawncare articles, and our website content.  He’s also our computer and HR guru. He even brings in some of our new products and is surely lending his insights and expertise to our Company’s ongoing business development and where we may yet take it in the future.

Customer Service & Sales

Liz Colbourne

Liz is another great find, literally the quintessential Customer Service/Sales Representative. She’s been a welcome addition to our SQLC team since joining us back in January 2024. She’s also our key Office & Administrative Support person. She looks after anybody that needs some looking after.

Local to Camrose since 1995, she seems to know everybody here in town, and that’s a key strength.  Many of our clients already knew her from the past. Her great reputation precedes her.  She’s worked in many businesses, with over three decades working in various sectors of customer service.

Liz is very much a “people person” and she takes a lot of pride in providing personalized service to suit each of our valued clients’ unique needs. She does her best to ensure she handles every situation and communication with kindness and respect. When Liz isn’t signing up new clients or renewing existing ones, she loves sharing what she has learned about correct lawn care practices and tips with anyone who asks.

She leads a busy home life. She has an enviable flower garden, and when not working, you can usually find her hitting the gym or heading out on another Honda Gold Wing life adventure with her husband Steve. Her Boss Cat sometimes accompanies her while she’s working, as you may hear some occasional purring in the background.

Liz is the kind of committed, loyal hard-worker that will go out of her way for anybody. And that’s the kind of servant’s heart she’s got. She’s not one of those that only does what’s adequate to get by with.  She does her best for our staff and clients always.  It’s no wonder our clients have nothing but great things to say about her.

Field Crew

We wouldn’t be who we are without their invaluable experience, committed work ethic and passion for what they do so well.  We have a great mix of year round Techs who have been with us for many seasons, as well as some Techs who are only winter Techs or summer Techs who  have been with us for a number of years, too.

We also have some brand new Techs who are also either year round or seasonal.  The faces out in the field are very consistent, yet dynamic from season to season so with this consideration we have decided not to include full bios on our website.  We suggest checking and following our Facebook page as we often feature our field staff in “Meet The Staff” posts from time to time.  We are grateful to have such dedicated, hardworking individuals on your lawns and we have been thankful to keep our hardworking field staff fairly consistently throughout the years.
